High Court in Onitsha, Anambra State, has issued Writ of Summons to Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo following an action filed against him by Mr. Peter Obi’s lawyer for alleged defamation.
The writ dated 25th June, 2026, was served by Obi’s lawyer, Alex Ejisieme, SAN.
The summons commanded Mr. Okonkwo to appear in 42 days “in the High Court of Anambra State, Onitsha Judicial Division, in an action at the suit of Mr Peter Gregory Obi; and take notice that in default of your so doing, the Plaintiff may proceed Bee may be given in your absence.”
Obi, who is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in the 2027 general election, is claiming that the statements made by Okonkwo on 8 June 2026 during his appearance on a national television, and published on other media platforms, were defamatory to him.
He is claiming general damages in the sum of N5billion for the injury caused to his reputation, character, integrity, public
image, political standing and goodwill by Kenneth Okonkwo’s “defamatory publications.”
Obi is also demanding aggravated damages in the sum of N2 billion having regard to the manner, breadth, persistence and repetition of the publications, including publications made after the Defendant became aware of the Plaintiff’s complaint and demand for retraction.
The NDC’s presidential candidate is also asking for exemplary damages in the sum of N1 billion
having regard to the Defendant’s deliberate repetition and amplification of the imputations after notice of the Plaintiff’s complaint.
Among Obi’s other claims is an order directing the Defendant, within seven days of judgment, to
publish at his expense a full, unreserved and unequivocal retraction and apology to the Plaintiff, in terms approved by this Honourable Court, in various media channels.
