IGP, Disu, Raises Hope Of Oyo School Children’s Rescue

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, on Wednesday in Enugu, expressed hope that the children and teachers abducted by gunmen in the Oriire Local Government, Oyo State, would soon be released.

Disu told reporters at the headquarters of the Enugu State Command that the police and other security agencies were not leaving any stone unturned in their effort to rescue the 39 children and their teachers.

“I want you to know that we are not resting on our oars. We are working day and night.

“What we are doing I will not be able to come out in the open to tell you.

“But I assure you very soon we will hear the good news,” the IGP said.

Speaking further on the insecurity in Nigeria, he assured Nigerians that the police and other security agencies were doing everything possible to curtail it, even at a risk to their lives

“Everyday officers and men of the Nigerian police are on duty and they have been able to record some successes.

“While doing this, we recording casualties too on our parts.

“Recently we lost three officers in Maiduguri—wonderful officers of the Nigerian Police Bomb Squad, EOD, unfortunaly, lost their lives while trying to detonate IDD planted by insurgents to kill people in the community.

“They saw it in the evening; people suggested that they should leave it till the following morning, but these officers, because they were so dedicated, they were in love with their jobs, they were trying to save lives, decided to go there that night.

“Unfortunately, they fell into a trap set by these bandits, and we lost three wonderful officers.

“These have been going on in many places. I want you to know that we are trying our best,” he said.

Forensic Centre

The police boss said that he was in Enugu to take part in the commissioning of the Forensic and Investigation Centre, built by the state government at Ugwu Omu, Nike, Enugu State.

According to him, the Forensic Centre will be of immense benefit to the Nigerian Police and other security agencies.

“It is a state of the art Forensic Centre, and I think it is the second or third in the whole of Africa. It is a thing of joy and that is why I came,” Mr. Disu said.

On preparations for the 2027 general election, the IGP said the successful conduct of last week’s off-season elections in parts of Nigeria is an indication that next year’s election would be held without any hitch.

“From the result I got everywhere, officers of the Nigerian Police did so well in the off-season elections.

“Be that as it may, we are still going to talk to them; we’re still going to embark on a lot of trainings because new laws have come up, new ways of doing things have come up.

“Most importantly, being the lead agency when it comes to election process, we know that we must continue to update our thinking and our procedures.”

The IGP said his visit to Enugu was also an opportunity to address officers and men of the state’s police command for the first time since he assumed as the police boss.

In his speech at the event, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, highlighted the achievements of the command under his leadership.
“We have made significant progress and intend to sustain the operations and ensure that all the criminal elements are rounded up and their tools of operations recovered soonest,” Giwa said.
