The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement exercise against vehicles operating with concealed, altered, defaced, obstructed, or unregistered number plates.
It is part of the command’s efforts to strengthen security and curb criminal activities.
Leading the exercise on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, urged vehicle owners and users to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and to desist from any act that obscures registration number plates.
According to Orutugu, the enforcement drive is aimed at enhancing public safety, improving vehicle identification, and preventing criminals from using untraceable vehicles to evade detection.
He said the exercise followed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, amid growing concerns over the increasing use of unregistered vehicles and the deliberate concealment of number plates, practices that undermine crime prevention and public safety efforts.
“The Anambra State Police Command is using this opportunity to reiterate its call on vehicle owners and users in the state to register their vehicles and avoid concealing number plates,” he said.
He added that the command had commenced full enforcement of the IGP’s directives against the use of unregistered vehicles, as well as the concealment, defacement, alteration, or obstruction of vehicle registration number plates.
Orutugu advised vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are duly registered and that registration plates are properly displayed and visible at all times, in line with existing laws and police directives.
He warned that covering, bending, defacing, removing, altering, or using unauthorised number plates constitutes a violation of the law and would attract appropriate sanctions.
“The enforcement exercise is aimed at strengthening security, enhancing intelligence gathering, and facilitating the prompt identification of vehicles used in the commission of crimes,” he said.
The commissioner called on motorists to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by complying with vehicle registration requirements and avoiding actions capable of concealing the identity of their vehicles.
He also assured residents that officers deployed for the operation had been directed to conduct themselves professionally, courteously, and in accordance with the law.
“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors in the state,” Orutugu added.
