CP Orders Probe Into Onitsha Shooting, Promisee to Pay Victims’ Medical Bills

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered an investigation into the shooting incident at the Onitsha Head Bridge on Wednesday.

Urging residents to remain calm, CP Ama assured them that those responsible for the incident would be held accountable based on the outcome of the probe.

The Commissioner gave the directive while addressing residents at the scene of protests that followed a confrontation that reportedly arose during an attempted arrest.

According to the police, suspects allegedly resisted arrest, leading to the discharge of a firearm resulting in gunshot injuries to some persons.

Speaking on the incident, CP Oji Ama said the immediate concern of the command was the welfare of the injured victims.

“The immediate priority of the Command is to ensure that the victims recover fully,” he said.

The Police Commissioner subsequently visited the victims at the hospital, where he assured them of the command’s support and pledged to personally ensure that their medical expenses are fully covered.

He also directed a comprehensive, impartial and fact-based investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the events that led to the discharge of the firearm.

According to him, the investigation will establish what transpired before, during and after the incident and ensure that appropriate action is taken in line with its findings.

CP Oji Ama appealed to residents and members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, urging them not to take actions capable of escalating tensions or disrupting public order.

He restated the command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human life and adherence to the rule of law, assuring the public that justice would be served based on the outcome of the investigation.

Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to the Onitsha Head Bridge area, with traffic and human movement fully restored following the de-escalation of the situation.

Spokesman for the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed the development in a statement, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to establishing the facts surrounding the incident and taking appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation.
