The principal suspect in the alleged flogging to death of a 12-year-old pupil in Adazi-Enu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, has surrendered to the police.
The suspect, Mrs Dim Ebere, a 47-year-old teacher, voluntarily reported at the Neni Police Station in Anaocha LGA following a sustained manhunt by the Anambra State Police Command.
The command had declared a search for Ebere after the pupil reportedly died from injuries allegedly sustained during a disciplinary flogging at a school in the area.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect’s surrender followed coordinated efforts by the command’s Safe School Protection Squad, officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, and community stakeholders.
Ikenga said the suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, where the investigation into the incident will be concluded.
The statement partly read: “Following sustained manhunt operations by the Anambra State Police Command’s Safe School Protection Squad, in collaboration with officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, and continuous engagement with stakeholders and community leaders in Adazi-Ani, the principal suspect, Mrs Dim Ebere, aged 47, has voluntarily presented herself at the Neni Police Station.
“The suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, where the ongoing investigation will be concluded.”
The command commended the cooperation of the Adazi-Ani community, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders whose support contributed to the suspect’s surrender.
It assured the family of the deceased and members of the public that efforts would be made to ensure justice is served, while urging residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
The police also appealed for continued public cooperation and the provision of useful information to support the ongoing investigation and other security operations across the state.
