The Anambra State Police Command has arrested three women for their alleged involvement in a child trafficking syndicate accused of selling a four-year-old boy for N2 million.

The suspects, identified as Florence Nnakuzie, 45; Hannah Ugah, 52; and Chinasa Daniel, 27, were arrested by operatives of the Awada Divisional Headquarters during an operation at a motor park in Onitsha on Saturday evening.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed this in a release on Sunday, said preliminary investigations revealed that Daniel allegedly delivered a two-week-old baby and a four-year-old child to Ugah on separate occasions between June and December 2025.

According to him, the four-year-old was allegedly handed over to Nnakuzie and sold for N2 million, while the two-week-old baby was allegedly sold to another woman who is currently at large.

Ikenga said the operation led to the rescue of some trafficked children, while other suspected members of the syndicate escaped and are being tracked by the police.

He said the arrests marked another breakthrough in the command’s sustained crackdown on child trafficking in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, described child trafficking as a grave violation of human rights and a crime against humanity, and directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive investigation.

Orutugu also ordered operatives to intensify efforts to apprehend other members of the syndicate and launch coordinated operations to locate, rescue and reunite the trafficked children with their biological families.

The police command commended members of the public whose credible information led to the operation and urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely intelligence to combat crime in the state.
