Amnesty International has taken a swipe at the call by the Senator representing Osun East, Francis Fadahunsi, to his supporters to kill members of the Accord Party.
Senator Fadahunsi’s call ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State has drawn wide condemnation across Nigeria.
The international human rights group, in post on X, said the remarks by Senator Fadahunsi, a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was capable of inciting violence in Osun state.
The post reads:
“Amnesty International strongly condemns Francis Fadahunsi (APC) — senator representing the Osun east senatorial district, who was on video during campaign, instructing his supporters to kill members of the Accord Party ahead of the state’s August 15 governorship election.
“Senator Fadahunsi’s reckless remarks were deliberate and solely aimed at inciting a bloody poll in Osun state.
“Nigeria authorities have an obligation to prohibit advocacy of hatred that constitutes incitement to hostility, discrimination or violence.
“The authorities must urgently denounce any statements, live, online or otherwise, which advocate violence.”
Amnesty International insisted Senator Fadahunsi must be held accountable.
