Former Chairman, National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu has called for review of membership of the National Peace Committee.
Odinkalu said on Sunday in post on X that such review would entail that renowned businessmen, Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola should cease to be members of the committee.
“It will necessary to review the membership of the Committee. People like Femi Otedola and Aliko Dangote should stand down from the membership,” Odinkalu said.
He also expressed concern over the silence of the National Peace Committee in the face of threats of violence by some politicians in the country.
“It must end its complicit silence and lead or construct an active civic coalition to face down acts or threats of violence by any and all sides,” he said.
Odinkalu further urged the Peace Committee to ensure that it has benchmarks for monitoring and reporting of breach of peace.
“The Committee must establish clear benchmarks for monitoring, compliance, & public reporting on observance as well as breach of the #PeaceAccord or lack thereof,” he said.
Odinkalu insisted the three things he listed must be addressed for the National Peace Committee to be taken seriously.
“Without these, the Committee may be best served by an honest admission that its mission has passed its sell-by date.
“Honest admission in this circumstance would be an act of courage. To persist in the present course would be deceit,” Odinkalu stressed.
