The body of Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, Awka, Anambra State, who was swept away by floodwaters on Tuesday, has been recovered.

The recovery was confirmed by the Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, who said other children involved in the incident were rescued and receiving medical treatment.

Okafor, who spoke while at Amaku Teaching Hospital, said, “The body of the missing child, Success Ezenwafor, has been recovered. The other children are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment at the hospital.”

Success was among children caught in the flood incident while returning from school during heavy rainfall in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

A family member said Success had left home for school on Tuesday after saying goodbye to his father, but did not return home.

Two other children from the Ezenwafor family who were involved in the incident were rescued and are currently receiving medical attention.

The family member described Success as a brave child, saying he reportedly broke one of the vehicle’s windows, creating an opening through which other children escaped.

Despite the efforts to escape the flooded vehicle, Success was unable to reach safety.

His death has thrown the Ezenwafor family into mourning and renewed concerns over the risks posed by flooding to schoolchildren and residents in flood-prone areas of Anambra State during heavy rainfall.

The incident has also highlighted the need for greater caution by motorists and residents around flooded routes, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.

Authorities and communities in the state continue to face the challenge of managing flood risks as heavy rainfall affects roads and residential areas.

The family is expected to make arrangements for the burial of the deceased pupil.
