The Chairmanship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for Ohaozara Local Government Area, Osborne Umahi, has commended the peaceful conduct of the Ebonyi State local government elections.
Umahi made his feelings known
while fielding questions from reporters, shortly after casting his vote at his Onuofukulu polling unit in Umunaga, Uburu, in the Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
He thanked the people of Ohaozara for their massive turn out for the election, stating that he was optimistic
that the outcome of the election would reflect the wishes of the people.
He said, “I am satisfied with the conduct of the election so far. I am happy to see that everything has been peaceful. I urge our stakeholders to maintain the peaceful atmosphere until the end of the exercise.”
The Senator representing Ebonyi South Senatorial District, Anthony Ani, described the election as a demonstration of the commitment the Ebonyi State to democratic principles.
Senator Ani, observed that the
state had remained peaceful, while adequate security measures had been put in place, to ensure a smooth electoral process.
According to him,”the election shows that we have embraced the principles of democracy.”
On the tenure of elected council chairmen, Ani said, “the duration is less important, what matters is the quality of governance provided these elected officials.
“The priority should be for governments emerging from the elections to deliver the dividends of democracy to people. The frequency of elections should not overshadow good governance and accountability.”
Also in an interview, the member representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Nkemkanma Kama expressed satisfaction with the voting process
Kama said the turnout of voters across the areas he visited showed that the people were interested in local government administration.
The lawmaker expressed confidence that the APC would emerge victorious across the 13 local government areas of the state, and called on winners to focus on their service the people.
He dismissed insinuations that the election was a one-party contest, pointing out that that no political party or individual was prevented from buying nomination forms to contest in the election.
The lawmaker said:”the absence of strong opposition in some areas was not the fault of the rulling APC because, people who wished to contest were free to approach the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC).”
At his Onu Borehole polling unit in the Onicha Local Government Area, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Valentine Okike-Uzor, noted that he had voted in the election, to exercise his constitutional right.
The commissioner also said he was confident in the victory for APC at the polls, and urged whoever emerges chairman to see himself as the leader of all residents of the local government, irrespective of political affiliations.
At the Onuofukulu polling unit in Umunaga, Ohaozara, where he voted, the State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Francis Ori, also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election.
He described the turnout of voters at his polling unit as demonstration of interest by his people in the electoral process, and their appreciation of the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru.
