The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has disowned a proposed rally for the endorsement of the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah.
The diocese also said it would not grant access to the Jubilee Hall of the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, to be used for the proposed rally.
There had been messages announcing that a rally would be held on Friday, 3 July, 2026, at the Jubilee Hall of the Holy Ghost, Enugu, where Tinubu and Mbah would be endorsed.
However, in a statement issued by the Director of Communication, Enugu Catholic Diocese, Rev. Fr. Anthony Aneke, the church distanced itself from the proposed rally, insisting that the Jubilee Hall, owned by the diocese would not be venue for the event.
The Enugu Diocese said it does not allow the use of its churches, parish halls or other ecclesiastical facilities for partisan political activities, including “Historic Endorsement Rally and Adoption Ceremony”
The Enugu Catholic Diocese said in the statement the planned event does not reflect the policy or position of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, stating that the event would not take place at the venue.
The statement read:“The Catholic Diocese of Enugu wishes to state that it does not permit the use of its churches, parish halls, or other ecclesiastical facilities for partisan political rallies, endorsements, or similar activities.
“Consequently, the use of Jubilee Hall, Holy Ghost Cathedral, for the said political event does not reflect the policy or position of the Diocese and therefore will not hold at the said venue.”
Expressing regret over any misunderstanding the announcement might have caused, the Diocese urged the public to disregard any impression that it had approved the proposed political event.
