The Catholic Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. Augustine Akubueze is dead.

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria announced his death in a release on Thursday.

Archbishop Akubueze, who was President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria,
was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in March 2011.

He served as the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria from 2018 to 2022.

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, in its release shared on its official Facebook page, called on Catholic faithful and people of goodwill to unite in prayer for the eternal repose of the late archbishop.

The release read: “In total surrender to God’s will and sure hope of the Resurrection, the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria invites all the faithful and people of goodwill to unite in prayer for the eternal repose of the soul of Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City and former President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria.

“May the Lord, in His infinite mercy, grant him everlasting rest. And may his soul, together with the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

The Catholic Secretariat did not state the cause of the Archbishop’s death in its release.
