The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has called on the Inspector-General of Police to mobilise immediate, coordinated efforts to establish the whereabouts of Mr. Omoyele Sowore and ensure that he is brought to safety, alive and unharmed.
Sowore, who is the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, in the 2027 general election, was reported attacked on Friday in Ekiti State.
Although Sowore said he was attacked by thugs, the Ekiti Police Command described the incident as an “altercation” at a restaurant.
In a statement issued by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, RULAAC said the concern raised about Sowore’s safety demands a prompt and credible response.
“The police must urgently verify the circumstances, deploy appropriate personnel and resources, and work with other relevant agencies to protect his life,” RULAAC said.
The rights rights group called on the IGP to immediately establish Sowore’s location and take all necessary lawful measures to secure his safety.
RULAAC also urged the IGP to ensure that any rescue operation prioritises the preservation of Sowore’s life and the safety of everyone involved.
Other request made by the group to the police boss is the provision of verified information to Sowore’s family and legal representatives, with public updates that do not compromise his safety.
Access to his lawyers, family, and medical care should be guaranteed.
The group urged the IGP to Investigate any unlawful conduct connected with the incident and ensure accountability through due process.
“Whatever anyone’s disagreement with Sowore’s views or activism, his life, dignity and liberty must be protected.
Political opinion must never determine whose distress receives an urgent response from the authorities,” RULAAC insisted.
The group said the immediate priority is to establish where Sowore is and ensure that he returns safe and alive.
