The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, RULAAC, has welcomed the latest response from the Nigeria Police Force concerning its petition to the Inspector-General of Police over the case of Ms. Nwosu Chikamso Jennifer and allegations arising from her arrest and detention by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command.
RULAAC stated this in statement issued on Friday by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma.
According to RULAAC, following its petition, the matter was referred to the IGP X-Squad, FCID Abuja for investigation.
“On 30 September 2026, RULAAC’s representative, Mr. Ekpewerechi Chidi, appeared before the investigating team in Abuja and formally adopted the petition by making a written statement.
“RULAAC’s intervention followed complaints by Jennifer that she was arrested after police officers looking for her brother could not find him; that she was detained for four days at the RRS facility at Awkuzu; and that ₦600,000 was allegedly collected in connection with securing her release on bail.
“The Anambra State Police Command has denied the allegation that ₦600,000 was collected for her bail and has maintained that Jennifer was arrested in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation,” RULAAC said.
RULAAC said that the conflicting accounts reinforced the need for an independent, evidence-based investigation in which all parties are heard and the relevant evidence is examined.
“During RULAAC’s representative’s meeting with the X-Squad investigation team, the CP reportedly assured him that Jennifer was safe and healthy.
“Given that RULAAC had been unable to reach Jennifer after she informed the organisation that she had been re-invited by the police, RULAAC subsequently sought clarification regarding the basis of that assurance and Jennifer’s current circumstances.
RULAAC said the police have responded to its petition stating.
It reproduced the police response in its statement as follows:
“Compliment sir, your message has been acknowledged. Meanwhile, arrangements have been nade to bring all parties involved, including Nwosu Chikamso Jennifer, to Abuja for a comprehensive interview with the DIG FCID, through the CP X-Squad, FCID Abuja. Thanks.”
RULAAC welcomed the decision to bring Jennifer and all other relevant parties before the FCID in Abuja for a comprehensive interview.
“This provides an opportunity to clarify the competing accounts, establish Jennifer’s circumstances and subject the allegations in RULAAC’s petition to an impartial investigation.
RULAAC also called on the police to allow Jennifer have access to her family and legal counsel.
“As arrangements are made for Jennifer’s interview in Abuja, RULAAC considers it particularly important that she be allowed unhindered access to her family, lawyers and RULAAC.
“Such access is necessary not only to reassure her family and those who have raised concerns about her welfare, but also to ensure that Jennifer has an opportunity to receive independent legal advice before and during any interview or statement-taking process,” RULAAC insisted.
RULAAC urged the investigating authorities to ensure that any statement obtained from Jennifer was made freely and voluntarily, without intimidation, coercion, inducement or duress.
“Allowing her access to a lawyer of her choice will strengthen confidence in the investigation and protect the integrity of whatever evidence emerges from the process,” the rights group said.
RULAAC reiterated that its intervention is not intended to shield Jennifer from lawful investigation.
“If credible evidence exists that she committed an offence known to law, she should be investigated in accordance with due process and, where the evidence warrants, brought before a court of competent jurisdiction.
:Equally, her allegations concerning the circumstances of her arrest and detention and the alleged collection of ₦600,000 in connection with her bail must be thoroughly investigated.
“Any officer or other person found responsible for wrongdoing should be held accountable in accordance with the law.”
While appreciating the Inspector-General of Police for directing an investigation and the FCID/X-Squad leadership for the steps taken so far, RULAAC urged that the entire process remain independent, transparent, evidence-driven and respectful of the rights, dignity and safety of everyone involved.
“RULAAC will continue to cooperate with the investigation while following developments closely to ensure that the truth is established and justice is served,” it said.
