Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has granted executive pardon to popular native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, and ordered his immediate release from custody.

Nwangwu, who had been remanded and subsequently convicted over charges linked to the promotion of quick-wealth practices and fetish activities, was released following the governor’s exercise of his prerogative of mercy.

Soludo announced the decision during his visit to the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Amawbia on Friday.

Addressing officials at the correctional facility, the governor said: “As I am leaving, you are leaving this facility as well. You are free with immediate effect.”

The governor subsequently signed the necessary documents authorising Nwangwu’s release.

Under the terms of the pardon, Nwangwu is expected to serve as an Ambassador for Youth Reformation, using his influence to promote value reorientation and discourage practices associated with unwholesome quick-wealth pursuits among young people.

Earlier, Soludo had visited the Onitsha Correctional Centre, where he interacted with inmates and said deserving prisoners would benefit from his prerogative of mercy.

He said the decision would be based on recommendations from a committee established to review the cases of inmates considered eligible for the exercise of mercy.
