Reports say the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. Peter Obi, was on Tuesday morning prevented from going into Benue State as he campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election.
The NDC presidential candidate’s photographer, Esther Umoh said in a post on X that she and others had just arrived in Benue when they were blocked by “alleged sponsored thugs” on Boko Road near the Air Force Base.
She alleged that the obstruction was aimed at preventing Obi from entering the state.
In a subsequent post, Umoh wrote that Obi wanted to proceed but “security personnels are not allowing him to.”
Another social-media user expressed support for Obi forcing his way through the alleged blockade, writing that he would be happy if Obi “forces his way through,” adding that “nobody has a monopoly of madness.”
Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, in April 2025, warned Peter Obi not to come to the state when the NDC presidential candidate wanted to visit displaced people there.
Alia said he could not guarantee Obi’s safety in the state without the required approval and security arrangements.
Hyacinth Alia is an ordained Catholic priest.
