Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a popular Awka-based comedian, master of ceremonies, disc jockey and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Aiza”, and another man in separate attacks in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
The killings occurred on Sunday, at Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, respectively, according to the Anambra State Police Command.
In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla were responsible for the attacks.
“The Anambra State Police Command has condemned in the strongest terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka, the State capital, on Sunday, August 30, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons,” Ikenga said.
He said the command received distress information about the attacks and immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas in an effort to track down the assailants.
According to him, the bodies of the victims were recovered from Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, and taken to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed them dead.
While Nwosu was identified as one of the victims, the identity of the second man remained unknown as of Monday.
Police operatives also recovered ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants may have trailed Nwosu from his residence before double-crossing his vehicle and shooting him. The circumstances surrounding the killing, however, remained under investigation.
Residents said the gunmen fired several shots as they fled the area, triggering panic and forcing people to seek safety.
Some residents also alleged that the attacks might be linked to cult-related activities. The police, however, have not established any motive for the killings.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, condemned the attacks, describing them as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the state.
He directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The command also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining areas as efforts continued to apprehend the suspects.
The police appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and other members of the public who witnessed the attacks or have credible information about the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the operation to come forward.
The command assured members of the public that information provided would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
Nwosu’s death has sparked grief among residents of Awka and members of the entertainment community, where he was a familiar figure.
Nwosu was known as a comedian, MC, DJ and media personality and had been active in the Awka entertainment scene for several decades, dating back to the 1990s.
He was particularly known for his colourful roadshows, during which he drove around the city in a Hilux truck fitted with loudspeakers to advertise products and make public announcements.
He was also associated with radio programmes and was recognised for his distinctive and theatrical style.
Tributes have since poured in on social media, with friends, residents and fellow entertainers mourning his death and recalling his contributions to the local entertainment scene.
The police said the manhunt for the perpetrators was ongoing and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
